durere études

I was invited to to produce an interactive sound installation at Humber Galleries in Toronto, Canada (September 4 – October 26, 2018).

I wrote 6 études for ‘durere’ (the word for ‘pain’ in Romanian) around an interactive granular synthesizer and 3D-printed models of the weights I use for my chronic illness. Études are typically short in nature and meant to improve a player’s technique and skill, although playing the piano for long periods of time is very challenging for me.

As part of the exhibit, I also performed an improvised audio piece that collaged the granulated études with their altered gallery counterparts, in extension of the motion-sensor activated instrument I previously created, and in an attempt towards lending interactivity to disability.
